The Kiasma staff have been working day in, day out the past few weeks in preparation for the extensive ARS17 exhibition that will open next Friday.
ARS17 will fill Kiasma’s walls with the most compelling and relevant contemporary art being created in Finland and beyond today. The theme of the exhibition is the digital revolution.
Since the exhibition period of ARS17 is exceptionally long, ending in January of 2018, everything will not be presented at the outset: there is a lot more in store for the coming year, including the following:
Alongside works of art, ARS17 will also feature performances by top contemporary artists. The first will be a performance by the controversial international duo Schönheitsabend, presented at Kiasma Theatre on 6 and 7 April. It is a YouTube-age reimagining of an early 20th century Orientalist ballet. Read more about the performance and purchase tickets here.
One of the performances that has drawn a lot of advance attention is #ALONETOGETHER by artist trio LaBeouf, Rönkkö & Turner. The month-long performance will kick off in April, when the artists arrive in Finland.
The piece will create a link between the public, through Kiasma, and the artist trio, who will live in separate cottages in Finnish Lapland for a month, isolated from the rest of society. The only way they can contact the outside world or each other is through a link with a cottage set up inside Kiasma.
The piece is a human experiment of sorts in which the artists explore their own dependence on other people. It examines loneliness and isolation in an age of extreme presence, and the ability of digital technologies to create a new forms of community.
The ARS17 events programme at Kiasma will last throughout the year. One of the first events is Student Day on 21 April. Read about the day’s events here.
